Teacher training processes and teachers' competence : A sociological study in the primary school
The paper describes part of a study whose aim was to investigate the relation between
modalities of teacher training and modalities of pedagogic practice implemented in the science classroom. The study is focused on primary school context and analyses the evolution of teachers performance in terms of their acquisition of recognition and realisation rules, i.e.
coding orientation, to specific scientific learning contexts.
Theoretically, the study is based on Bernstein’s theory of pedagogic discourse (1999, 2000)which provided the concepts to characterise the modalities of teacher training and of classroom pedagogic practices and to analyse teachers’ evolution in terms of recognition and realisation rules. The sample was made up of four teachers and their four socially
heterogeneous school classes. An action-research methodology was followed. The results suggest that the teacher training implemented was favourable to the teachers’
professional development and their competence to lead all children to a high level of scientific development. The efficiency of the training process has to be mostly attributed to the strong classification of the researcher-teachers relation and to the strong framing of evaluation criteria, selection and sequence, together with weak framing of hierarchical rules and pacing.
Crowdsourcing: personal values and self-efficacy as antecedents to creative behavior
Creative crowdsourcing and crowdsourcing for innovation initiatives (hereinafter called CCI) are a business model that allows companies to leverage the crowd’s skills and know-how through online platforms where the individuals (solvers) voluntarily supply them with ideas and solutions. CCI initiatives are similar to open contests and depend heavily on submissions that actually solve the posted challenges. Despite the frequent use of incentives (financial and others) CCI dynamics relies above all on the individuals’ predisposition and motivations.
Understanding the impact of personal values and self-efficacy on this kind of initiatives will decrease the level of uncertainty caused by the lack of any previously relation, link or contact between the companies and the solvers (which are anonymous). Certain studies point to a correlation among some values and self-efficacy with creativity. While it is difficult to change personal values, self-efficacy is a well-documented approach to change behaviors.
In order to answer the research question “How do the motivational antecedents affect the participants’ creative behavior in CCI initiatives?” the research will pursue the following topics:
- assess solvers’ values;
- evaluate their self-efficacy levels;
- establish connections between the solvers’ values and self-efficacy.
Given the need to capture the phenomena as a whole this investigation will adopt a qualitative approach based on netnography methodology. Considering the research question and the theoretical background based on values and self-efficacy, it will adopt a preliminary step comprising an anonymous online questionnaire issued to creative solvers. The research will follow with online interviews hoping to seize the interviewees’ experiences, in order to draw all possible insights related with their CCI initiatives engagement
The virtual learning environments may, according to several authors, constitute themselves as very interesting solutions, capable of fulfilling presential education scenarios and promoting more active student participation during the learning process, in accordance to the Bologna education model. However, there is still little known about the real influence of these environments in the educational process. Thus, in the scope of the present research, a study was developed with the main goal of evaluating the impact of a virtual learning environment on the lecturing of presential sessions, in the construction of shared knowledge and the development of appetencies and transversal and specific skills, particularly in the domain of the edition and the treatment of digital images, in a group of students at a higher education level. During the study, the adopted plan included, among other tasks, socialization activities with the use of the virtual learning environment, group work which involved the search and share of information, as well as autonomous exploration of specific software. The gathered data allowed us to draw positive conclusions about the use of virtual learning environments in a higher education subject, mainly because of the advantages in the access to content and services, and also at an interaction level between the teacher and the students, and the students amongst themselves. However, some of the problems presented by the students, regarding the access to the Internet, conditioned the use of the platform and limited it’s use to classroom scenarios and to the time the students spent at school
Virtual learning environments: (as)synchronous communication and interaction in a higher education level
The adoption of virtual learning environments in education contexts has shown great potential, especially at a communication and interaction level between teachers and students. At a higher education level, and in accordance with the Bologna spirit, these virtual environments gain special importance by allowing the prolonging of learning beyond the classroom and the class period. Bearing this in mind, it was considered relevant to develop a study focused on the adoption of a virtual environment, coordinated with in classroom sessions, by a group of students from a polytechnic higher education institute. The main results achieved point out that the use of these environments are an advantage, mainly at an interaction level between teachers, students and both, as well as in matters concerning the access to content and services
The role of supervisor in transfer of learning to the workplace
suportado pela literatura (Antos, & Bruening, 2006).The concern regarding training evaluation has been rising in the past several years,
which increased the number of models developed to evaluate training (Tzeng, Chiang, & Li,
2007). This raise is justified by findings stating that training can give competitive advantage
to organizations (Brum, 2007), so it is very important to evaluate this human resources (HR)
practice (Holton, 1996).
The aims of this research were not only identify and analyze the factors affecting transfer of
learning to the workplace, but also to understand supervisors’ role in this process. To achieve
our objectives the methodology used included a quantitative and qualitative research, using
PLTSI (Velada, Caetano, Bates, & Holton, 2009) and exploratory interviews conducted to
managers.
Generally speaking, Holton’s model (1996, 2005) is supported by this research. The reliability
of the scales was good and in the interviews almost every factor of the model was mentioned
as a possible facilitator or inhibitor of transfer of learning.
A very interesting result is the fact that, as expected by the literature review (Antos, &
Bruening, 2006), managers identified indirect relationships between their roles and other
factors influencing transfer of learning
